      A Letter

                             ECW President

Welcome to the website of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Virginia.  We are one of the largest and strongest ministries in the Episcopal Church.

We have a rich history in the Diocese of Virginia.  The organization was founded in 1889 by Miss Sallie Stuart who served as the President, Secretary, and Treasurer of what was then called the Women’s Auxiliary.  She was a forward-thinking, mission-minded lady who unselfishly gave of her time.  The organization continues with her vision.

Membership is composed of ALL women in the Episcopal Church.  Not all parishes in our diocese have an active ECW group, however, most do.  Some parishes may call them “Women’s Ministries,” “Bible Studies,” “Women’s Fellowships,” or “Guilds.”  Even though these organizations may not use the formal name “Episcopal Church Women,” they are, however, considered to be “Episcopal Church Women” in community with one another.

As women together learn more about our Lord Jesus Christ, we find we are called to serve others just as Jesus did.  Historically, it has been the women who have set the pace for mission work, not only in our own backyards, but also worldwide.  As we join together beyond our parishes with prayer and financial support, we are able to focus our efforts and make a difference in various mission projects.  We have a partnership with women in South Africa; we care for children in Richmond, in Jarrett and in Covington; we launched a mission in 2005 to serve women in the Dominican Republic.

We continue our “Call to Action” for women and children in crisis by supporting the startup of the Episcopal Transitional Home of Incarcerated Women in Richmond in partnership with the Daughters of Zelophehad.

The Episcopal Church Women can and should be a vital part of your parish.  If you need help starting a group in your parish, see our contact information on the Board Page and the Regional Presidents Page.  Just click on the tabs to the left for any of these pages.

This organization is blessed to have the explicit support of our Bishops.
