HENDERSON,
Barbara Clawson "Bobby", of Irvington died peacefully on April 18, 2008,
after a brief period of declining health. Mrs. Henderson was born July 11,
1918 in Plainfield, New Jersey, the youngest of five children of Dr. and
Mrs. Frank T. Clawson. She graduated from Hartridge School for Girls, then
went on to the College of William and Mary, where she was captain of the
varsity field hockey team. She graduated in 1940. A loyal alumnus, she was
class reporter until just one month ago, and did a remarkable joy staying in
touch with and reporting on activities, accomplishments and milestones for
her classmates. It was also at William and Mary that she met another student
who would become her husband of nearly 65 years, Franklin D. Henderson.
"Frank and Bobby" married on May 1, 1943 in Ogden, Utah, where Mr. Henderson
was stationed at the Air Force Base. When Mr. Henderson was called to duty
in Europe, Mrs. Henderson returned to Plainfield, N.J. for the duration of
the war. After the war, the Hendersons remained in Plainfield until 1951,
when they moved to Lancaster County, settling in Irvington in 1952. Mrs.
Henderson became actively involved at Grace Episcopal Church and eventually
served as president of the Women of the Diocese of Eastern Virginia. She
also taught nursery school at Chesapeake Academy for several years. Mrs.
Henderson was a lifelong bridge player, who played regularly and well. She
always knew where the cards were and was a pleasure to have as a partner or
an opponent. Bobby was a charming, gracious, sincere, and utterly selfless
and unpretentious wife, mother, and friend. We will miss her deeply. Mrs.
Henderson is survived by her husband, Frank; three children, Barbara H.
Slack of Manakin-Sabot, Ann H. Kramer of Richmond, and Daniel Henderson of
Keene, New Hampshire. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and three
great- grandchildren. Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, April
21, at Grace Episcopal Church, Kilmarnock, with The Rev. David H. May
officiating. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to William and
Mary Alumni Society Fund, P.O. Box 2100, Williamsburg, Va. 23187-2100; or
The Grace Trust, P.O. Box 1059, Kilmarnock. |
