
| SHIELDS, Jean Blain, widow of Charles W. Shields Jr., died on Thursday, May 8, 2008. She was the daughter of Jean Vaughan Blain and Samuel Stuart Blain of Roanoke. Mrs. Shields had been a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where she served as President of the Women of St. Stephen's, May Fair Chairman, May Fair House Chairman, Chairman of the Altar Guild, and was the second woman to be elected to the Vestry. Later she served as Altar Guild Chairman for the Episcopal Church Women in the Diocese of Virginia and then as its President in 1978-1980. After making her home at Westminster Canterbury, she served as Altar Guild Chairman for the Episcopal Services, Lay Eucharistic Minister and President of the Residents Association. She had also served in the community on the Junior Boards of The Retreat Hospital and The Virginia Home. Mrs. Shields was a member of the Council of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and The Woman's Club. Also in recent years, she had been a tour guide for Richmond, the Capitol and Agecroft Hall. She also planned trips for the Women of St. Stephen's for a number of years. She is survived by her son, Charles W. Shields III and his wife, Shean; her first daughter-in-law, Karen Priest and her husband, Larry; five grandsons, Lance David Shields, Charles Wyatt Shields IV, John Isaac Shields, Jeremy Michael Shields and Stephen Joel Shields; one granddaughter, Elisabeth Anne Shields; her sister-in-law, Virginia Wells Blain; nephews, Ted Blain and Stuart Blain and his wife, Lynne; and a niece, Virginia Kuertz and her husband, Rick. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Burial in Hollywood Cemetery will be private. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, in the Sara Belle November Theater at Westminster Canterbury. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Altar Guild at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226 or the Fellowship Fund at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Ave., Richmond, Va. 23227. | |
